MEET THE TEAM

Kwasi Asante

USPSA Master | Firearms Instructor | Team Blacksmith Captain | Cybersecurity Professional

Gun: MPA DS9-2011 LOC Single Action

Kwasi Asante’s path into competitive shooting began with a deeply personal moment. While wearing an Eric Garner “I Can’t Breathe” sweater at a Chick-fil-A, he was intimidated by a man with a gun. That experience motivated him to learn self-defense—not just to own a firearm, but to become highly skilled and accurate with one.

His first competition, entered alongside teammate Will Robinson, was an eye-opener. The pair placed around 50th out of 75 shooters, quickly realizing the stark difference between shooting at paper and competing under pressure. Since then, Kwasi has used competition as a tool to gather quantifiable data on his skills, measuring himself against the best in the world. His dedication has paid off: he is now a USPSA Master, one of only a handful of Black Masters in the country—a number that has grown from about 10 to closer to 15.

Beyond his personal achievements, Kwasi has served as a national trainer for Black gun groups across states including Texas, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and Maryland. He emphasizes staying true to Black identity and causes, rather than assimilating into mainstream gun culture that doesn’t align with his values. His biggest strength is teaching and leadership, with a direct, hands-on communication style that helps others grasp technical skills with confidence.

Kwasi’s training routine is rigorous: daily dry fire practice, weekly live fire sessions, and weekly matches, supplemented by several intensive training events each year. He works on speed and accuracy simultaneously, recognizing that USPSA requires both in equal measure. He shoots a Masterpiece 2011 double-stack single-action pistol and even makes his own ammunition.

Outside of shooting, Kwasi works in cybersecurity, focusing on cloud infrastructure forensics and compliance (PCI, HITRUST). He is also a skilled ping pong player and once bowled competitively, carrying an average of 224. As captain of Team Blacksmith, Kwasi serves as both leader and big brother, fostering camaraderie and growth among the team. His advice to newcomers is simple yet powerful: learn from everyone, but stay true to your own identity and causes.
